This video is a recording of the Security in Context event "War in Gaza and US Policy," which was held on October 24, 2023.
After a decade or more of marginalization, the Hamas attacks of October 7th, 2023 and subsequent Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip, has brought the Israeli-Palestinian conflict back to the center of the international agenda. While most countries issuing public statements condemned the attacks by Hamas, there is an increasing divergence between Western European and North American countries on the one hand and many Global South countries, particularly as Israel’s total blockade and bombing of Gaza are being condemned as war crimes. As the humanitarian situation in Gaza becomes more catastrophic there have been widespread calls for a ceasefire. In this light, the policy of the United States has come under scrutiny. This webinar will discuss US Policy in the current war both in the short-term as well as within overall US policy towards the Israel-Palestine conflict in general and its broader Middle East policy.
Joining us to discuss these issues are four experts on the Middle East and US Policy:
Steven Simon - Professor of Practice at the University of Washington and Senior Research Analyst at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft
Mouin Rabbani - Middle East Expert and co-editor of Jadaliyya
Matthew Duss - Executive Vice President, Center for International Policy
Sarah Leah Whitson - Executive Director of DAWN
Moderator: Omar Dahi - Founding Director of Security in Context
