Germany has stopped approving war weapons exports to Israel: Report
September 19, 2024
German weapon shipments to Israel are temporarily on hold as legal cases accusing such transfers of breaching humanitarian law are underway. The government has publicly rejected the notion that the pause on weapon export license approvals represents any kind of ideological boycott. The 2023 exports to Israel, totaling approximately over US$350 million worth in weapons, were ten times larger than shipments in 2022. Yet from January through to August, the net worth of exports have totaled only about US$15 million, with weapons of war representing a measly $35k. In two recent court cases the German government claimed that aside from spare weapons for long-term contracts, no weapons of war have been exported under licenses since October 7th. Similar challenges to arms exports to Israel have occurred in countries ranging from the Netherlands and United Kingdom to the United States.
UN overwhelmingly backs Palestinian resolution to end Israeli occupation
September 18, 2024
The UN General Assembly has voted in favor of resolution based on an International Court of Justice advisory opinion and put forward by the Palestinian Authority demanding an end to Israeli occupation in Gaza and the West Bank. This resolution stands out from many others because it sets a deadline of one year rather than just a vague demand, and the vote occurred just days before annual major UN meetings. The resolution outlined the need for compensation for Palestinians under military occupation, as well as the removal of Israeli settlers and profit-seeking entities from lands occupied by Israel from 1967 onwards. The rapid shattering of a unified West Bank due to Israeli settlers during the second half of the 20th century has made a two-state solution increasingly unlikely. This in turn has increased interest for one-state solutions, but these tend to lack a large and diverse basis of support. Only 14 countries voted against the resolution, with many of them arguing that the resolution fails to fully affirm Israel’s right to defend itself. Notably Article 51 of the UN already outlines that states have a right to defend themselves from external security threats. The problem is complex in this case as if Palestine is argued to be under occupation by another state, Palestinian militant resistance would in some legal circles reflect Palestinian “self-defense” rather than an unjustified attack on Israel, an ironic reversal of the Israeli defense. Others went further in their criticisms of the resolution by slamming the Palestinian Authority as an example of “diplomatic terrorism” despite being separate from and typically in opposition to Hamas (a relationship debatably not too dissimilar from that of Lebanon and Hezbollah).
Palestinian poll finds majority of Gazans say Hamas' Oct. 7 attack was wrong
September 17, 2024
An opinion poll was conducted in Gaza and the West Bank in early September, and found that unlike during the early days of the war, a majority of Gazans now disapprove of the October 7 attack though a majority of West Bank Palestinians still generally expressed approval (at a lower rate than previously reported). Notably the vast majority of both groups generally do not believe in Israel-promoted claims of mass killing and sexual abuse of Israeli civilians during the attack. Based on responses given, it appears that support for the attack tends to be partially due to the amount of publicity the Palestinian cause has gotten as a result. Support for a two-state solution has risen to almost half, and jumps to over a half when the phrase “two-state solution” is not used and when borders include an undivided West Bank reflecting the 1967 partition. Finally, the poll revealed that over three quarters of Gazans claimed a family member has been injured or killed in the war.
UN Gaza aid chief: World is failing innocent civilians
September 16, 2024
Roughly 200 UN aid workers have been killed in the Gaza war, many from UNRWA, the largest Gaza-based UN organization. The organization, accused by President Netanyahu of being “totally infiltrated” by Hamas, has been investigating and firing employees with possible links to the attacks on October 7th. The senior-most UN official in Gaza overseeing aid and infrastructure, Sigrid Kaag, has met with major Israeli officials like Netanyahu for “constructive” talks while still maintaining that the UNRWA is the “backbone” of UN aid in Gaza. She expressed a deep pessimism about their ability to meet the needs of the Palestinian populace especially without a ceasefire. Earlier this month an Israeli airstrike on a UN school sheltering civilians (and according to Israeli officials, some Hamas militants) led to 18 deaths, a third of which were UN staff.
Israel army recruits African asylum speakers to offset Gaza troop losses: Hamas
September 15, 2024
In a recent statement, Hamas claimed that the IDF has engaged in recruitment drives among African asylum-seeking refugees in exchange for expanded residency rights. The organization deemed this as both racist and indicative of desperation on the part of Israeli officials to compensate for a loss of active soldiers. In additional news, the Israeli internal intelligence agency Shin Bet (also known as Shabak and equivalent to the United States FBI) recently created a task force with the goal of assassinating the head of Hamas’ political bureau, Yahya Sinwar.
Four killed as Israel’s large-scale assault on West Bank enters third week
September 12, 2024
The largest West Bank offensive in roughly two decades has now resulted in over 50 casualties, many more arrests, hundreds of displaced civilians, and dozens of thousands cut off from road access as well as water and sewage systems after mass bulldozing of basic infrastructure. This has mostly occurred in the northern governorates, particularly Tulkarem, Jenin and Tubas. Spread through public radio, far-right member of parliament Almog Cohen has called for sieges on West Bank cities with any detected militant presence.
‘State of Palestine’ takes seat in UN General Assembly despite lack of full membership
September 11, 2024
Despite still lacking full membership and thus the ability to vote due to vetoes by the United States, a permanent Security Council member and strong ally of Israel, the UN General Assembly granted the State of Palestine the right to sit amongst member states and submit proposals and amendments. The Israeli deputy ambassador lamented the decision, claiming that any change that “improves the status of the Palestinians” is simply rewarding terrorism.
Israel finds bodies of six captives killed in air strikes on Gaza
September 1, 2024
After almost a year, the IDF has uncovered the remains of six Israeli captives of Hamas in a tunnel underneath Rafah, one of whom was also a US citizen. The six deceased individuals were revealed to have died very recently, and half were on a Hamas list for release back in July. A senior Hamas official claimed they were killed in an Israeli airstrike. This has put even more pressure on Netanyahu to secure a deal for the release of captives, but his refusal to accept any ceasefire deals (including one recently put forth by President Biden) has increasingly landed him in hot water with the Israeli populace. Many have begun to view him as treating Israeli captives as merely a political sacrifice for his anti-Hamas campaign to appease his more right-wing support base.
